Week Six
Chances are, you are feeling less bothered by your pain. You are feeling like you can move a little better and like you can start to add back some of the things you’ve been avoiding due to your neck pain. Your education videos this week offer some great news about getting back to life and about how to avoid falling back into the pain cycle in the future.
This week will challenge you a bit to add some movement that has become difficult, neck flexion. Research shows that there is no bad posture. Bad posture doesn’t cause neck pain, and correcting posture won’t fix it. You know now that pain is about so much more than tight muscles or tissue damage. Yet many of my students cling to the Holy Grail of posture. I want you to know that while obsessing over your posture won’t help you, awakening some long dormant muscles does seem to be helpful in relieving pain. Neck flexion is something that we see is very problematic in neck pain sufferers, these muscles become timid or muted in their activity over time, which makes the muscles on the back of the neck and upper back work even harder. So this week you will gently remind your body of how it feels to flex the neck, how you can use this movement functionally. This is often very successful in relieving that tension in the back of your neck.
