Hypervigilance & Chronic Pain: Your Nervous System's Alarm System
Nervous System Regulation: Shifting from Pain Frustration to Somatic Curiosity
When you understand that pain is a protective output from a hypervigilant nervous system, your entire relationship with your body shifts. You no longer need to view your body as a hostile enemy to be fixed or stretched into submission. Instead, you can move from frustration ("I can’t feel better until my tissues are fixed!") to curiosity ("My nervous system feels threatened right now—how can I show it that I am safe?").
Take a 1-Minute Somatic Check-In To Facilitate Safety
We don't convince a protective nervous system of safety by thinking about it—we show it through physical sensation. Try this simple 1-minute check-in right now:
Unclench Your Jaw: Notice if your teeth are pressed together or if your tongue is glued to the roof of your mouth. Create a tiny gap between your upper and lower teeth, allowing your jaw to hang loosely.
Drop Your Shoulders: Are your shoulders hitched up toward your ears or pulled back tightly for "good posture"? Allow them to drop down away from your neck, melting like warm butter.
Soften Your Belly: Are you holding your stomach in or gripping around your hips? Let your abdomen expand softly as you take a gentle, slow breath in, and let it fall as you exhale.
What you felt before letting go was your bracing pattern—your nervous system's way of holding you ready for a threat that isn't there. Simply noticing and releasing this bracing sends an immediate "safety signal" back to your brain. If you’d like to explore this process a bit further, I’ve included a guided breath practice to discover where your body is bracing against “danger.” Awareness is the foundation of somatic practice and evidence-informed, non-pharmacological pain care. Taking a few minutes for this practice is a wonderful act of self-care that you can provide for yourself today.
Take Your Next Step Toward Chronic Pain Relief
Retraining a hypervigilant nervous system doesn't require hours of grueling PT exercises or mobility work. It's not about pushing through pain or forcing your body into an exercise habit you used to have. It starts with small, daily inputs of safety that teach your brain it can finally let go.
