The 5 Most Common Myths About Pain
The Five Most Common Pain Myths
The fact is, pain is very poorly understood in the US. The average MD in the US gets about 4 hours of pain science education. Contrast that with over 30 for Veterinarians, and you begin to understand why we have an epidemic of chronic pain. I could talk to your for days about all of the misconceptions about pain that I hear everyday, but I’ll start with just 5 big ones. These are the ones that really mess up my client’s recovery and keep them stalled for months or years. Before they find me of course.
Just as a little cheat sheet, the 5 most common pain myths are:
- You can’t feel better until your tissues are healed or fixed.
- Tight muscles cause pain
- If the doctor can’t find any damage on the scan there is “nothing wrong” and it’s “all in your head”
- If you fix your posture you will heal your pain.
- If you are in pain, it’s best not to move around until you feel better.
